How can we rise to the challenge of fostering a connection with one of the planet’s most important yet least understood environments?
Deep sea ecosystems are under unprecedented pressure. Filled with species and habitats millions of years in the making, the deep sea is a central component of life on earth and one that may not recover from increased industrial activity. From bottom trawling, deep sea mining, and the impacts of climate change, the deep sea is facing threats that could destabilize the carbon pump and our entire marine food chain.
Thousands of people, scientists, civil society, organizations, Indigenous groups, and companies are saying no to nascent industries like deep sea mining. As the world’s first regulations for activity in the deep sea are currently being negotiated, there has never been a more pivotal moment to engage the public with the importance of these environments.
